Perfect Math SATs and Muscular Dystrophy: An Entrepreneur’s
Solution to Scheduling for Emergency Service and Retirement Care Providers
Founder’s Story – How Tony Grillo Wrote Industry-Changing Scheduling Software
Schedule Ease was founded by Tony Grillo in 1993.
So what, you might think. Every company has a founder.
But how many companies have a founder who could only move his right hand and facial muscles? In spite of having a rare form of muscular dystrophy, Tony took a huge risk and left his secure and well-paid engineering job to become a computer consultant.
Eventually, he would one day write a groundbreaking scheduling software program.
We lost Tony in 2010, 42 years longer than doctors said he would live. But until that day, he lived the life of an entrepreneur who refused to be held back by anything, or anyone.
Tony always loved numbers. So when his parents demanded he receive a standard education, in the face of resistance from the local school board, Tony outperformed most of the other kids, and one day scored a perfect 800 on the math portion of his SAT. He did so well in school that he was once accused of cheating. Yeah – the guy who can only move one hand.
Eventually, he won a full academic scholarship to Stockton State College. Read news article of Tony’s story
Why Retirement Care and Emergency Services Scheduling?
Tony was a superb software programmer, and could have gone into any field. But he was drawn to the unique scheduling challenges faced by particular industries that have to operate multiple departments for 24 hours a day, and with a great variety of skill sets.
With hundreds or thousands of employees at a single location or spread out across several, creating a schedule for healthcare, retirement care providers, and public safety poses a unique set of challenges.
Tony was drawn to this because it’s a specific, complex, but solvable problem that – when solved – will probably save people’s lives. And ultimately, it boils down to numbers, ease of use, and saving the most possible time for the HR departments and scheduling managers.
Tony believed he could create a software program that would give you all the tools you need to create your schedules in the least amount of time and with the lowest amount of stress.
